Mazda CX-5 2026 Leak Reveals Sales Timeline, Nearly as Long as Mitsubishi Outlander, Likely to Feature Hybrid Options

The third-generation Mazda CX-5 is expected to go on sale in late 2025 with significant upgrades, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain options.

Mazda CX-5 New Generation Sales Schedule

According to Australia’s Drive, the 2026 Mazda CX-5 will be available globally by the end of 2025.

This information comes from members of a German CX-5 forum, who claim local dealers have informed them that the third generation of Mazda’s best-selling model will debut in the European market between September and November 2025.

Typically, a new model is unveiled several months before sales begin, suggesting that the global debut of the new Mazda CX-5 could take place in the first half of 2025.

Although Mazda has not officially confirmed the exact timeline, Alastair Doak, Mazda Australia’s marketing director, stated in May:

“Mazda has officially confirmed that there will be a new [CX-5], which is fantastic news.
We’ve updated the current model multiple times — most recently not too long ago — and it remains our best-selling product.
We already have a timeline [for the next generation], and we feel comfortable with it. The car will be unveiled soon.”

What’s New in the Mazda CX-5 2026?

In Europe, the next-generation Mazda CX-5 is expected to launch first with a mild-hybrid version, using the familiar 2.5L naturally aspirated gasoline engine to meet the continent’s stringent emissions standards. Fully hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants will follow later.

The new European mild-hybrid version is expected to produce around 104 kW (139 hp) and 238 Nm of torque, which is lower than the 2.5L 24V mild-hybrid engine currently offered in the region, producing 143 kW (194 hp).

Beyond performance tweaks, the powertrain system is also expected to receive refinements to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). Mazda claims its new technology improves combustion efficiency, reduces emissions, and increases low-end torque.

Reports suggest that German dealerships have already seen a full-scale clay model of the new CX-5 during a private event in Frankfurt, alongside the Mazda EZ-6 electric vehicle (designed for the European market) and another unnamed SUV.

In Mazda’s financial report released in May, the company confirmed plans to equip the next-generation CX-5 with a Mazda-developed hybrid engine. Globally, the new model will compete directly with the popular Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

It’s expected to be Mazda’s first fully hybrid SUV, meaning there may not be purely gasoline or diesel variants. However, Mazda might still offer the 2.5L turbocharged gasoline engine in select markets such as Australia and the U.S.

Design and Dimensions

In terms of design, one forum member revealed that a dealer described the new CX-5 as “sharper-looking” and 110 mm longer than the current generation — reaching 4,685 mm in length.

If accurate, this would make the 2026 CX-5 one of the largest C-segment SUVs, nearly matching the Mitsubishi Outlander (4,695 mm) in length. This likely means a roomier and more comfortable cabin for passengers.

Globally, the Mazda CX-5 remains the brand’s top-selling vehicle, with 354,850 units delivered in 2023, followed by the CX-30 (200,784 units) and the Mazda3 (178,745 units).
